TV Reader
Privacy Policy
Last updated:
This policy covers TV Reader for Apple TV, TV Reader Sync for iPhone and iPad (including its “Send to TV” action), and this website. They are made by CurrentOrbit LLC (“we”, “us”).
The short version
- We don’t run servers for TV Reader and we don’t collect any information about you. There is no account, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking.
- Your books, reading progress, highlights and notes stay on your devices and in your own private iCloud, which we can’t access.
- Text leaves your devices only when you use a feature that needs it, such as translation, and then it goes only to the service you chose.
What the app stores, and where
On your devices and in your iCloud. TV Reader keeps your library (book files, covers, titles and authors) together with reading positions, bookmarks, highlights, notes and saved translations. When iCloud is turned on, this data syncs through Apple’s CloudKit to the private database of your Apple Account, so it appears on your other Apple TVs and in TV Reader Sync. Each reading position includes the name of the device you read on. Appearance, read-aloud and translation preferences sync through iCloud key-value storage. Apple’s privacy policy covers iCloud.
In the keychain of each Apple TV. API keys you enter for translation services are stored in that Apple TV’s keychain. They are not synced, and they are never sent to us.
Deleting your data. Deleting a book in the app removes it, with its progress, highlights and notes, from all your devices. You can remove everything the app has stored in iCloud from your Apple Account’s iCloud storage settings on an iPhone, iPad or Mac.
Translation
Translation runs only when you turn on bilingual reading, choose “Translate this chapter now”, or translate text you selected. The paragraphs being translated, or your selection, are sent with the language codes directly from your Apple TV to the translation service selected in Settings:
- Google Translate (the default, which needs no key)
- DeepL, Google Cloud Translation or Microsoft Translator
- OpenAI, or another OpenAI-compatible service you set up (for example DeepSeek, Groq, OpenRouter or your own Ollama server)
- Anthropic Claude
- a LibreTranslate server you set up
That service handles the text under its own privacy policy and terms; we never receive it. Translations are saved to your iCloud so each paragraph is translated only once.
On iPhone and iPad, “Translate whole book” in TV Reader Sync uses Apple’s on-device translation, so the text stays on your device.
Adding books
- Project Gutenberg. When you open or search the Project Gutenberg browser, your search terms and language filter are sent to Gutendex (gutendex.com), a public catalogue of Project Gutenberg books. Books you choose are downloaded from the address the catalogue gives, usually gutenberg.org.
- Download from a URL. TV Reader requests the address you enter. That website sees an ordinary request from your Apple TV, including its IP address.
- Send from iPhone. Books sent from an iPhone or iPad travel directly over your local network, not through the internet. The first connection is confirmed with a one-time code shown on the TV; after that, transfers are encrypted. To pair, the two devices exchange their names, models and random identifiers. While “Receive books sent from iPhone” is on, your Apple TV announces its name on your local network.
- Upload over Wi‑Fi. When you start it, your Apple TV serves a small upload page on your local network until it has been idle for 15 minutes. The page is protected by a 6-digit code shown on the TV. It can show your library’s titles and reading progress, and it can receive translation API keys. The connection stays on your local network but isn’t encrypted, so use it only on networks you trust.
Purchases
TV Reader Pro is sold through the App Store, and Apple handles payment. We never see your payment details or your Apple Account. The app checks what you own on the device with Apple’s StoreKit and keeps a note of your current plan in your iCloud so TV Reader Sync knows about it. Apple sends us sales reports that don’t identify you.
Read aloud
Read aloud uses the voices built into tvOS and runs on your Apple TV. If you choose your Personal Voice, tvOS asks for your permission first.
What we don’t do
- We don’t include analytics, crash-reporting, advertising or tracking code.
- We don’t use the advertising identifier or track you across apps and websites.
- We don’t sell or share personal information, and we don’t build profiles.
Children
TV Reader doesn’t collect personal information from anyone, including children.
This website
This website is a static site hosted on Cloudflare Pages. It sets no cookies and uses no analytics. Cloudflare processes technical data such as IP addresses to deliver and protect the site. If you pick a language, your browser remembers the choice in its local storage.
Your choices and rights
Because we don’t hold personal data about you, there is nothing for us to access, correct or delete. Your data stays under your control: delete books in the app, manage iCloud data in your Apple Account settings, and remove API keys in TV Reader’s settings. Text sent to a translation service is covered by that service’s policies. If you have questions about your privacy, contact us.
Changes
If this policy changes, we’ll post the new version here and update the date above.
